Mission Statement

BuxMont Unitarian Universalist Fellowship’s Religious Education Board strives to:
bulletTeach the meaning and importance of the Unitarian Universalist principles,
bulletEncourage respect and compassion for a variety of different people and different lifestyles,
bulletGive our children awareness of and respect for many cultures and faiths,
bulletFoster a commitment to social action,
bulletHelp our children to become independent thinkers, and
bulletEncourage personal spiritual exploration,

Using a variety of learning styles, creative arts and life experiences.

Goals in Religious Education

We believe as Unitarian Universalists it is our responsibility to accept one another and encourage spiritual growth in our congregations. Our religious education program is designed to introduce new concepts, to provide opportunities to develop personal beliefs in a responsible and thoughtful manner, to encourage experience of the sacred in everyday life and to participate in an active community.

Over the course of each child’s religious education we intentionally include four items:

  1. Unitarian Universalism
    We teach our children to be familiar with the Unitarian Universalist Principles and Purposes.  They learn about UU history and the women and men who have exemplified these principles in their lives.

  2. The Bible
    "Our children learn about the Bible in Sunday school, in age-appropriate ways. We do not teach it as the literal word of God but we do think the Bible is important to know for at least three reasons:

    1. There are good lessons and inspiring words in it.

    2. Ours is a Jewish and Christian culture, and anyone who doesn’t know about the Bible is culturally illiterate.

    3. Knowing more about the Bible from a historical perspective enables our children to explain their own beliefs better to others who are biblically oriented.”

  1. World Religions
    As Unitarian Universalists we believe that there is value and beauty in all the world religions as well as many similarities. Exposing children to the beliefs and practices of other nations help them to be more accepting of a variety of cultures and help them to understand themselves as a part of the greater world.

  2. Goal Of Ethical Living
    It is our feeling that religious values are acquired through “deeds not creeds".  Our children are given the chance to live their faith by participating in various service projects.  We teach our children to love their neighbor, to work for a better world and to search for truth with an open mind. Ultimately, we want our children to become responsible adults who make their own decisions about what to believe and how to live.
