BuxMont RE Code of Conduct For Adult Volunteers Working with Children and Youth at BuxMont Unitarian Universalist Fellowship The purpose of this Code of Conduct is to promote a safe emotional and physical environment for the children in our Religious Education classes by fostering an environment of kindness, trust, respectfulness and fun. The relationship between teachers and students should be one of mutual respect. The BUUF congregation has the following specific expectations for adults working with children and youth: - Sexualized Behavior – It is never appropriate to engage in any manner of sexualized behavior nor sexually provocative language with a child or youth, including jokes with sexual content. It is best to allow the child or youth to initiate physical expressions of affection such as hugs, and the adult must be sensitive not to allow them to be prolonged.- "Friendship" with Youth – Although we hope that youth and adults will have a genuine fondness for one another, adults should not look to youth for "friendship". Friendships between adults and youth are discouraged, as they are inherently unequal. The adult is the one who must assume primary responsibility for maintaining appropriate boundaries and cultivating an atmosphere of health and trust. It is the adult volunteer’s responsibility to avoid or discourage inappropriate friendships.- Unofficial Contact with Youth – Sometimes a healthy and genuine mentoring relationship will develop between youth and an adult. However, someone could try to disguise an unhealthy relationship with a youth as a mentoring relationship. If an adult wishes to be in contact with a youth outside of fellowship classes and events, it must be with the knowledge and consent of the youth’s parents.- Confidentiality – Adults who work with children and youth at BUUF are responsible first to the children and youth, but to the fellowship as well. Sometimes an adult will learn that a child or youth is the victim of abuse, is suicidal, has a serious drug problem, etc. That information must be communicated to the BUUF professional staff immediately.Statement of Agreement: I have read and understand BUUF’s Code of Conduct for Adult Volunteers working with Children and Youth. I agree to abide by the provisions of this Code of Conduct and to honor and preserve the trust placed in me by the members of this congregation.
