March 7: “Margaret Fuller Shapes the Consciousness of America through the New York Tribune”

Speaker: Michael Barnett

Margaret Fuller (1810–1850) was considered the most brilliant woman of her time. She was a leading Transcendentalist with her colleagues Emerson, Thoreau, and A. Bronson Alcott. From 1844 to 1850, Margaret served as the first woman social and literary critic and foreign correspondent for Horace Greeley’s New York Tribune. Theologian and educator Michael Barnett will share her extraordinary achievements for women’s rights, social justice, and democracy as relevant for us today during her Bicentennial.

March 14: “Welcoming the Stranger”

(UUSC Justice Sunday)

Speaker: Si Kahn

The base of the Statue of Liberty bears the words of the Jewish socialist poet Emma Lazarus: “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free...send them, the homeless, tempest-tossed, to me. I lift my lamp beside the golden door.” These are welcoming words. But are they still the reality for the 12 million undocumented immigrants who are already working and living in the United States—and for the millions more will soon come here, one way or the other? Will we “welcome the stranger”—or insist that they all “go back where they came from”? As the country braces for what will be a deeply bitter, divisive battle over immigration reform, the prophetic voices of people and communities of faith can be, must be, a source of hope.

Si Kahn is an internationally renowned folk songwriter, with 16 albums to his credit. He is also the founder of Grassroots Leadership, which has been instrumental in the campaign against immigrant family detention centers. Si is the author of several books, including the classic Organizing: A Guide for Grassroots Leaders and his newest work, Creative Community Organizing: A Guide for Rabble Rousers, Activists and Quiet Lovers of Justice. (Please join us after the service for a potluck with Si Kahn, followed by a workshop on Creative Community Organizing.)

March 21: “The Senior Youth Group Service”

Speakers: Senior Youth Group

The Senior Youth Group has not yet decided what they will be sharing with you, but will be working on it very soon and look forward to you being there to receive it!

March 28: “Faith and Freedom”

Speaker: Rev. Daniel S. Schatz

Unitarian Universalists sometimes define ourselves as “The Faith of the Free.” Is this an oxymoron? What does it mean to be a faith without creed or dogma?

SMALL GROUP MINISTRY

Small Group Ministries are a way to connect with other BuxMont folks in a small setting. Groups of no more than 12 people meet at least once a month, often in members’ homes, to talk about spiritual questions and share in each other’s lives. If you are interested in joining a Small Group Ministry, talk to Rev. Dan Schatz or pick up a signup form at the Small Group Ministry bulletin board in the social hall. Newcomers are always welcome.

Currently, the monthly meeting times for our groups are as follows:

1st Sunday 1:00 at the Fellowship
2nd Tuesday 7:30 Ambler
4th Wednesday 7:30 Southampton
2nd Thursday 7:30 Doylestown
