Nominating Committee Chair Job Description

The BUUF By-Laws state that a Nominating Committee of no less than three and no more than five members shall be elected for one-year terms at the Annual Congregational Meeting.  Nominating committee members may not serve for more than three consecutive terms.  The Nominating Committee takes office immediately following the election and elects its own Chair. Currently the Congregational Meeting is in May at a time determined by the Board of Trustees.  The Board of Trustees must be provided with a slate of consenting candidates proposed by the Nominating Committee a minimum of two weeks before the date of the Congregational Meeting

The spiritual mission of the Nominating Committee is to seek individuals uniquely suited, by temperament, interest, or experience, to the task we are asking them to perform, so that the mission of BUUF will be furthered.  We understand that standing committee leaders carry forth the “m” in ministry.  Their function is to complete a task but we will educate them that additionally their task is to consider the spiritual needs of the people who belong to their committees.

The Chair of the Nominating Committee leads the Nominating Committee in its duties as outlined in the By-Laws:

bulletPresent a slate of candidates for election to each open office, including the succeeding Nominating Committee, and if necessary a Settled Minister Search Committee, at the Annual Meeting or any special Congregational Meeting held for election.
bulletRecruit and recommend to the Board of Trustees Chairs of Standing Committees
bulletPrepare an annual written report for the Board of Trustees.

Additional duties and considerations include:

bulletIn identifying a slate of candidates input from the Board, the newcomer worker, and the minister is needed.
bulletWe agreed to refine and elevate the process of identifying and asking members to serve the fellowship in the following ways:
bulletWe will develop job descriptions based on the information provided by the current person occupying that place of leadership.
bulletWe will provide accurate information regarding the time commitment involved based on the experience of current leaders.
bulletThe Nominating Committee will identify candidates by concensus.  We will share in the work of identifying potential leaders throughout the year.
bulletWe will issue a formal call letter to an identified potential leader and recommend them to the Board for approval, and issue a handwritten thank you note when a member answers the call.

Note: The Nominating Committee may not present a member of their own committee as a candidate for any elected office except that of member of the Nominating Committee.  In the past this has necessitated a special request during the Congregational Meeting for a Nominating Committee member to step down before the slate of candidates was proposed so that that individual might be elected to serve in another capacity.
